Potassium permanganate (
KMnO4cap K cap M n cap O sub 4
𝐾𝑀𝑛𝑂4
) is a powerful inorganic oxidizing agent, often appearing as dark purple crystals or powder, that dissolves in water to form an intense pink or purple solution. It is widely used for its antimicrobial, disinfectant, and sanitizing properties in medical, agricultural, and industrial applications.
- Formula:
KMnO4cap K cap M n cap O sub 4
𝐾𝑀𝑛𝑂4
(consisting of Potassium ions
K+cap K raised to the positive power𝐾+
and Permanganate ions
MnO4−cap M n cap O sub 4 raised to the negative power𝑀𝑛𝑂−4
).
- Appearance: Dark purple, odorless crystals with a metallic sheen.
- Reactivity: Strong oxidizing agent; reacts violently with organic materials, acids, and glycerin.
- Solubility: Soluble in water, forming a purple solution.
- Medical/Skin Infections: Diluted solutions (1:10,000) are used as an antiseptic to treat weeping eczema, impetigo, fungal infections (athlete’s foot), and superficial wounds.
- Water Treatment: Used to remove iron, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), and manganese from well water, as well as to control zebra mussels and algae.
- Produce Preservation: Oxidizes ethylene gas, thereby slowing the ripening process of fruits like bananas and mangoes during storage.
